Estimation of the local production of antibodies to Treponema pallidum in the central nervous system of patients with neurosyphilis.

چکیده
In 76% of 149 patients with neurosyphilis local production of treponema-specific IgG antibodies in the central nervous system (CNS) was determined by estimating the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-to-serum ratio of TPHA-IgG titre per mg total IgG. With this formula synthesis of treponema-specific IgG antibodies in the CNS could be detected independently of the function of the blood-CSF barrier. A selective increase of total IgG in the CSF was not found in all cases. Forty-three patients with adequately treated or spontaneously resolved syphilis without clinical evidence of involvement of the CNS by Treponema pallidum served as controls.

Background: Neuromyelitisoptica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a series of central nervous system diseases with positive aquaporin-4 antibody. And neurosyphilis is a manifestation of the late syphilis. Although Neuromyelitisoptica (NMO) following syphilis has been previously reported, transverse myelitis and neurosyphilis in the same patient with positive aquaporin-4 antibody has never been menti...
متن کاملCXCL13 chemokine as a promising biomarker to diagnose neurosyphilis in HIV-negative patients
BACKGROUND Chemokine ligand 13 (CXCL13) is believed to play a role in the recruitment of B cells in the central nervous system during neuroinflammation. Neurosyphilis is a group of clinical syndromes of the central nervous system caused by Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum) infection. The relationship between CXCL13 and neurosyphilis still needs further study. In our study, CSF and serum CXCL13 c...
متن کاملDiagnosis of neurosyphilis by examination of the cerebrospinal fluid.
Thirty-six patients with reactive results in the cerebrospinal fluid to the Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay (CSF-TPHA) were investigated by further serological tests for confirmation of active neurosyphilis. The results of the TPHA and fluorescent treponemal antibody tests were reactive in all CSF samples from patients with acute untreated neurosyphilis and from most patients with la...
متن کاملCanadian Public Health Laboratory Network laboratory guidelines for the diagnosis of neurosyphilis in Canada
Neurosyphilis refers to infection of the central nervous system by Treponema pallidum, which may occur at any stage. Neurosyphilis has been categorized in many ways including early and late, asymptomatic versus symptomatic and infectious versus non-infectious. Late neurosyphilis primarily affects the central nervous system parenchyma, and occurs beyond early latent syphilis, years to decades af...
متن کاملNeurosyphilis in a young Indian expatriate.
Neurosyphilis is the infection of the central nervous system with treponema pallidum species, and true to its reputation as the old mimic, can present with a multitude of clinical scenarios, one of which is stroke in the young. Rare in developed countries, except for an at-risk population of drug abusers and HIV infected patients; it is still common in the rest of the world. We describe the cas...
